Standing over 93 metres tall, the Statue of Liberty had to be designed in pieces and shipped from France in over 350 individual parts, then reassembled on a specially built pedestal in New York Harbor. Her copper skin is just 2.4 mm thick—as thin as two pennies—yet it holds its shape thanks to a revolutionary internal iron framework designed by Gustave Eiffel, the same engineer behind the Eiffel Tower. More than just a monument, it became a symbol of freedom seen by millions of immigrants as their first glimpse of America.
